The Medical University of Vienna is not only the largest medical school in Austria, it is also one of the most important top-level research institutions in Europe and provides Europe's largest hospital, the General Hospital Vienna, with all of its medical staff. With its long history and tradition, which covers 640 years, the Medical University of Vienna has developed into a highly modern research institution that covers an area of 40,000 m². It employs a staff of 5,000, of which 1,800 are researchers and 1,600 are medical doctors. Each year 100,000 patients are treated as inpatients in 31 university clinics, 48,000 operations are conducted and 605,000 outpatients receive initial treatment in the day-clinics.
The RESTORE team in Vienna is led by Dr. Wolfgang Spiegel, who is a research fellow and a senior lecturer in general practice/family medicine at the Department of General Practice, Center for Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. Dr. Spiegel´s main fields of research are mental health, medical education and policy related research. He has lectured extensively on issues related to cross-cultural care on the undergraduate level, on the postgraduate level as well as in continuing medical education (CME) interventions delivered to practicing GPs. Being a practicing GP himself and running his own medical office in a Viennese suburban area with a high influx of migrants, he has plenty of experience with various aspects of care for migrants. In the nineties Spiegel has organized a large humanitarian aid project for a Russian children leukemia clinic and has traveled extensively to low and middle income countries both privately and as expert for primary care in medical projects. The Vienna team, besides contributing to other work packages (WPs) of RESTORE, is taking the lead in work package 8 (Dissemination).
The research associate of the Vienna team is:
Christine Princz, born in 1986, finished her study in 2010 and holds a master's degree in Sociology from the University of Vienna. During her studies she specialised in quantitative and qualitative empirical methods. She is well experienced in different statistical testing-methods, using standardised questionnnaires and holding interviews. She's been already a member of a group of researchers, which published the so-called: "Kinderarmutsbericht" (a report about child-poverty in Austria) in 2009. In her master thesis, about intercultural problems within the Austrian Army, she used a guided interview, improving her qualitative skills, as the main empirical method. She has also taken courses about mental health and migration at the University of Vienna, which familiarized her with some of the issues RESTORE deals with. As a part-time employee in RESTORE she is planning to join the doctoral program of applied medical science at the Medical University of Vienna.
